If your dog gulps meals, buy the slow feeder first — speed is a health issue (why dogs eat too fast, and in big breeds, bloat risk), and the bowl fixes it at every single meal with zero effort. If your dog eats politely but destroys the house out of boredom, start with a snuffle mat. Plenty of households eventually run both: the maze bowl for meals, the mat for enrichment sessions. But as a first purchase for a fast eater, it isn't close.

Can a slow feeder do the mat's job?

Partially. Working a maze is genuine enrichment — dogs finish a maze meal noticeably calmer than a bowl-in-one-gulp meal. What it won't replace is dedicated scent-foraging play. If enrichment is your main goal and gulping isn't a problem, the mat earns its spot.
